CUET UG 2026 Complete Guide: Latest Updates, Exam Dates, Pattern, Eligibility and What Every Student Needs to Know Right Now

Latest Update: NTA has postponed the CUET UG exam scheduled for 28 May 2026 (both shifts) due to the revised Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) holiday. Revised dates for affected candidates have not been announced yet. Keep checking cuet.nta.nic.in directly.

If you are a Class 12 student right now, you already know how stressful this period is. Boards just got over, parents are asking about college options every other day, and somewhere in the middle of all that, you have to deal with CUET UG 2026. And honestly, the frequent date changes and NTA portal issues are not making things easier.

So let’s just cut through the noise. This is a straightforward breakdown of everything you need to know about CUET UG 2026, written for students who are actually going through this process right now, not for someone reading about it casually.

What Exactly is CUET UG?

CUET UG stands for Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate programmes. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and works as a single national entrance test for UG admissions across central universities, state universities, deemed universities, and private institutions.

Before CUET came in, students applying to Delhi University, BHU, AMU, or Jamia had to appear in multiple separate entrance exams, sometimes on the same weekend, in different cities. It was genuinely exhausting and expensive, especially for students coming from smaller towns.

CUET changed that. One exam, one score, accepted by over 200 universities. That is the core idea.

The syllabus is primarily based on Class 12 NCERT, which is the most practical part of this whole system. If you studied seriously for your boards, you are already halfway there.

Who Can Apply for CUET UG?

The eligibility is fairly open, which is one of the better things about this exam.

  • Age limit: None. There is no upper age limit for CUET UG
  • Qualification: Passed Class 12 from a recognised board, or currently appearing in 2026
  • Boards accepted: Central and state boards, NIOS (with 5 subjects), IB Diploma, and equivalent qualifications
  • Subject flexibility: In 2026, NTA has given students more freedom in choosing domain subjects. You are not strictly locked to your Class 12 stream in many cases

One thing students often miss: clearing CUET is necessary, but each university also has its own cut-offs and sometimes additional criteria. Check your target university’s admission portal separately. Do not assume CUET score alone is enough.

Reservation benefits follow standard Government of India norms covering SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwD, and PwBD categories. Document verification happens at the university stage, not during CUET registration.

Exam Pattern and What Has Changed in 2026

NTA made some meaningful changes this year that are worth knowing.

The total subject count is now 37, which is lower than previous years. Several subjects have been discontinued, including Entrepreneurship, Legal Studies, Fashion Studies, Tourism, and Engineering Graphics. If you were planning to apply to programmes related to these areas, those admissions now use the General Aptitude Test (GAT) score instead.

All papers are a uniform 60 minutes, and you can choose up to 5 subjects typically, based on what your target university requires.

Marking scheme:

ActionMarks
Correct Answer+5
Wrong Answer-1
Unattempted0

The domain subject syllabus is Class 12 NCERT based. Languages test reading comprehension and vocabulary. GAT covers general knowledge, current affairs, quantitative reasoning, and logical reasoning.

Score normalisation is applied across shifts because different shift papers can vary slightly in difficulty. Your raw score is adjusted to account for that.

The May 28 Postponement: What Students Actually Need to Do

Here is the thing that is stressing a lot of students out right now.

NTA officially postponed the 28 May 2026 exam (both morning and afternoon shifts) because the government revised the Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) public holiday date. The revised exam dates for affected candidates have not been announced yet as of this writing.

If you were scheduled for 28 May, here is what you should actually do:

  • Go directly to cuet.nta.nic.in and check for official notices
  • Monitor your registered email and mobile number for NTA alerts
  • Do not trust WhatsApp forwards or random Telegram groups for rescheduled date information. Seriously. The amount of misinformation circulating is high right now
  • The NTA helpline is 011-40759000 and email is cuet-ug@nta.ac.in if you need to reach them directly

The rest of the exam schedule from 11 May is continuing as planned. The overall exam has not been cancelled.

Participating Universities

Over 200 universities accept CUET UG 2026 scores. That includes roughly 45 to 50 central universities, along with state, deemed, and private institutions.

Some of the major ones:

University
University of Delhi (DU)
Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)
University of Allahabad
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University

The full list is on cuet.nta.nic.in. It is updated periodically, so cross-check with your specific target university’s own admission portal before finalising anything.

Results, Counselling, and What Comes After

NTA will release normalised CUET UG scores in June 2026. These are scores, not ranks in the traditional sense. The normalisation accounts for difficulty variation across multiple exam shifts.

There is no centralised counselling for CUET UG. Each university runs its own admission process independently. You register on each university portal separately using your CUET application number and score.

Some programmes include additional tests or interviews on top of the CUET score. Check this in advance for every university you are targeting.

About scholarships: CUET UG itself does not offer direct scholarships. But getting into a central university through CUET opens access to several government and institutional scholarship schemes including the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), PM Vidyalaxmi, and state-level financial aid programmes. The long-term value of getting into a reputed central university through this route is significant for PG admissions, campus placements, and competitive exam preparation.

A Honest Take on CUET UG as a System

This section is not in any official brochure, but it is worth saying.

CUET UG is a genuinely good idea that is still being executed imperfectly. The concept of one exam replacing dozens of fragmented tests is correct. It reduces cost and stress for students, especially those from smaller cities who could not afford to travel for 8 to 10 different exams.

But the NTA’s execution has had real problems. Server crashes on application days, last-minute postponements, and communication gaps create genuine anxiety for students who are already managing board exams and family pressure simultaneously. The 28 May postponement, announced just days before the exam, is a good example of this.

Students dealing with this are not being dramatic when they say it is stressful. It actually is. A Class 12 student who has planned their revision schedule around an exam date, arranged travel to a test centre, and mentally prepared for a specific shift, deserves better logistical handling than this.

The 2026 subject reduction and streamlined pattern are positive steps. The implementation side still needs improvement.

Practical Tips That Actually Help

  • NCERT first, everything else second. Do not skip chapters thinking they are low-weightage. Read the full textbooks for your domain subjects
  • Practice CBT mocks specifically. Doing well on paper is different from doing well in a timed CBT environment. The interface, the scrolling, the clock pressure, all of it affects performance. Get comfortable with it before exam day
  • Choose your subject combination based on target university requirements, not based on what feels easy. Check the university’s official admission criteria before deciding
  • For GAT, cover current affairs from at least the last six months. General knowledge and reasoning make up a meaningful chunk of the paper
  • If you are waiting for the rescheduled May 28 date, use that extra time productively. Do not let the uncertainty spiral into stress-based inaction

Final Thoughts

CUET UG 2026 is one of the more important exams you will sit in your student life, not because it is the hardest, but because the score travels far. One good performance opens doors across 200 plus universities simultaneously. That is a real advantage over the old system.

The exam is live, results are coming in June, and university admissions start from July. If your papers are done, start researching university portals now so you are not scrambling later. If you are still waiting for a rescheduled date after the 28 May postponement, stay patient, keep checking the official site, and use the time well.

You have done the hard part. The preparation is done. Now it is about executing on the day.
