Latest Update: The CUET UG 2026 exam dates for May 28 have been shifted to May 31, June 6, and June 7, 2026 due to the Bakrid holiday. New admit cards are already live on the official portal. If you have not downloaded yours yet, do it today.
If you are a Class 12 student right now, there is a good chance the CUET exam is giving you some sleepless nights. And honestly, that is fair. This one test decides your shot at central universities like Delhi University, BHU, JNU, and over 260 other institutions across India. More than 15.68 lakh students registered this year alone. That number tells you everything about how seriously people are taking it.
Gone are the days when a 99% board score was your only ticket to DU. The CUET exam changed that system. But it also brought its own challenges, like NTA’s CBT portal going slow during peak traffic, admit card confusion, and rescheduled dates at the last minute. So yes, it is better than the old system, but it is not without friction.
What Exactly is the CUET Exam?
CUET stands for Common University Entrance Test. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency and works as a single entrance point for undergraduate admissions to central and participating universities across India.
Before this exam existed, students had to either chase impossible board cut-offs or appear for multiple university-level tests. Some students were appearing for 6 to 8 different entrance exams in a single season. CUET replaced all of that with one standardized test.
The exam runs entirely in Computer-Based Test mode. You can choose up to 5 subjects from a pool of 37, which includes languages, domain-specific papers, and a General Aptitude Test. Your subject combination should match what your target university program actually requires. Do not just pick randomly.

Who Can Appear for the CUET Exam?
This is where CUET is genuinely student-friendly. The eligibility is pretty open.
- Passed or appearing in Class 12 from any recognized board (CBSE, ISC, state boards, NIOS, or boards recognized by AIU/UGC)
- No age limit at all
- No stream restriction either. Science students can choose Commerce domain papers and vice versa
- PwBD candidates with 40% or more benchmark disability get scribe support and extra time
One thing people often miss: the eligibility for CUET itself is broad, but each university sets its own minimum percentage requirement for admission. Many require at least 50% for General category students. Always check the specific university prospectus before finalizing your subject choices.

Documents You Will Need
Keep these ready in digital format well before exam day. Do not scramble the night before.
- Passport-size photo (JPG/JPEG, 10 to 200 KB, white background)
- Scanned signature (4 to 30 KB)
- Class 10 and 12 mark sheets
- Category certificate if applicable (SC/ST/OBC/EWS in PDF format)
- PwBD or UDID certificate if applicable
- Valid photo ID for the exam hall. Aadhaar works best for quick verification.
- Printed admit card with self-declaration on exam day
How to Apply: Step by Step
The full process is online at cuet.nta.nic.in.
- Register with a unique mobile number and email
- Fill in your personal and academic details
- Choose your subjects, up to 5, and preferred exam cities
- Upload documents in the correct formats
- Pay the fee online
On the fee payment step, try using UPI if you can. The NTA portal’s card payment gateway tends to slow down when a large number of students are submitting simultaneously. Better to use UPI and get it done in one shot.
Fee structure (approx.): General category students pay around Rs. 1000 for up to 3 subjects. OBC/EWS pay Rs. 900. SC/ST/PwD candidates pay Rs. 800. Extra subjects cost more. Fees are non-refundable, so double check your subject choices before paying.
Scholarships and Financial Benefits After Admission
CUET itself does not come with a scholarship attached to it. But once you secure admission to a central university through CUET, several doors open up.
Students from SC/ST, OBC, and EWS backgrounds get heavily subsidized tuition at central universities. You also become eligible for schemes on the National Scholarship Portal, including Post-Matric scholarships and Merit-cum-Means schemes under the Ministry of Education.
Some private participating universities, including Chandigarh University, offer up to 100% fee waivers based on CUET scores. Students in West Bengal can also access state-specific scholarship programs after securing admission through this route.

Why You Actually Need to Care About This Exam
Here is the practical side of things that does not get talked about enough.
For students from smaller towns or Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, CUET is genuinely a big deal. One exam. One preparation cycle. Access to some of the best central universities in the country without multiple rounds of travel and application fees. That is a real improvement over the old system.
From a career perspective, graduating from institutions like DU, BHU, or JNU still carries significant weight in campus placements, government job eligibility (UPSC, SSC, banking), and postgraduate admissions. A strong CUET score gets you in the door. What you do after that is up to you.
Also worth noting: do not skip the General Aptitude Test. It is optional for some programs, but attempting it expands the number of universities and courses you are eligible for. It takes 60 minutes and can significantly widen your options.
Quick Tips Before Your Exam Day
- Download your admit card from cuet.nta.nic.in right now, especially if your date was rescheduled
- Carry a transparent pen, printed admit card, one passport photo, and original photo ID
- Reach the centre at least 30 minutes early. CBT centres have strict entry cutoffs
- Prepare from NCERT Class 12 syllabus for domain subjects. That is the official base
- Practice with the mock tests on the NTA portal. The interface takes some getting used to
The Bottom Line
CUET has genuinely made university admissions more accessible and fair for students across different boards and backgrounds. Is it a perfect system? Not yet. NTA still has work to do on exam logistics and technical reliability. But compared to the chaos of board cut-offs and multiple separate tests, it is a step in the right direction.
