India’s biggest medical entrance test is getting a complete re-run. The National Testing Agency has fixed June 21, 2026 as the new date for the Re-NEET UG examination, after the original May 3 test was scrapped over a major question paper leak. A CBI investigation is already underway, with multiple arrests made across several states.
The re-exam runs from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM in pen-and-paper mode. All 22.05 lakh candidates who sat on May 3 are automatically eligible. No fresh registration needed.
CBI Closes In on the Paper Leak Network
The CBI has registered a formal case and moved fast. At least 9 to 11 people are in custody so far, with arrests spanning Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Investigators believe the papers were accessed between April 23 and 27. They were handwritten, converted to PDFs, and sold to students and parents for anywhere between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. Distribution happened through Telegram groups, WhatsApp, and coaching institute back-channels.

Security for Re NEET Gets a Complete Overhaul
The government has completely changed how security will be handled on exam day. The Indian Air Force is being brought in to manage the physical movement of question papers. Every centre will have CCTV cameras with footage saved for 90 days, AI-based monitoring systems, biometric checks at entry, and 5G jammers to block any wireless communication.
A High-Powered Steering Committee has already reviewed the logistics. Power backups, weather contingencies, and mock drills are all confirmed.
The Supreme Court turned down petitions asking for a shift to Computer-Based Testing for this cycle. That debate will likely continue for future years, possibly from 2027 onward.

The Human Cost Nobody Is Talking About Enough
This is not just an administrative failure. At least 5 to 6 student suicides have been linked to the stress and uncertainty after the cancellation. One case from Madhya Pradesh involved a family that had borrowed money specifically to fund coaching. That detail alone should make policymakers uncomfortable.
Speaking to several medical aspirants preparing for the June 21 re-test, the mood is a mix of exhaustion and cautious relief. “We just want a fair exam this time so our two years of hard work aren’t wasted,” said one student who had travelled to Kota for intensive preparation.
As we noted in our coverage of the May 12 cancellation, the scale of this paper leak is unlike anything seen in recent NEET history, far beyond the isolated grace marks controversy of 2024.

How the Original Exam Was Compromised
The May 3 exam was held across more than 5,400 centres in India and overseas. Registration had crossed 22.79 lakh candidates. Before the test, a “guess paper” surfaced that reportedly matched several actual questions. Complaints poured in quickly and the government ordered a CBI inquiry. Official cancellation came between May 12 and 15.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has described the government’s response as a “whole-of-government approach.” Opposition parties and student groups are not satisfied and continue demanding a full reform of NTA.
